Etymology:
Of unclear origin; often suggested to be from L. abdere: “to hide, conceal”
Definition:
The cavity of the belly, which is lined by the peritoneum, and contains or hides the visceral organs; often restricted in humans to the part between the diaphragm and the beginning of the pelvis, the remainder being called the pelvic cavity.
