Abductor digiti minimi (foot)
Etymology:
From L. abducere: “to lead away” [from ab (“away”) + ducere (“to lead”)] + L. digitus: "a finger, toe, digit" + L. minimus: "a being of the smallest size"
Definition:
A muscle which lies along the lateral (outer) border of the foot that leads the smallest toe (pinky toe) away from the foot.
The abductor digiti minimi is innervated by the lateral plantar nerve, a branch of the tibial nerve. Its homolog in the arm is the abductor digiti minimi muscle in the hand.
