Abductor pollicis longus
Etymology:
From L. abducere: “to lead away” [from ab (“away”) + ducere (“to lead”)] + L. pollex: "thumb" + L. longus: “long”
Definition:
One of the extrinsic muscles of the hand. Its major function is to abduct the thumb at the wrist. That is, it is the longer of two muscles (its shorter counterpart being the abductor pollicis brevis) in the hand that functions to lead the thumb away (i.e. abduction) from the hand. Its tendon forms the anterior border of the anatomical snuffbox.
