Acanthosis
Etymology:
Gr. akḗ: “thorn” + Gr. ánthos: “flower” + Gr. -osis: "disease process", so named because the stratum spinosum resembles the prickly leaves of the Acanthus spinosus plant
Definition:
A benign abnormal thickening of the stratum spinosum, or prickle/spinous cell, layer of the epidermis.
