Acetic acid
Etymology:
L. acetum: "sour wine", later used in French as vin aigre (aigre meaning "sour, bitter"), from which we get vinegar. The acid in vinegar is indeed acetic acid.
Definition:
A clear, colorless organic acid, CH3COOH, formed by the bacterial oxidation of ethanol through acetic fermentation; it is used as a solvent and has very many industrial applications; it is the major acidic component of vinegar.
