Achalasia
Etymology:
Gr. a-: “not, without” + Gr. khálasis: “relaxation”
Definition:
A neuromuscular condition where a ring of muscles is not able to relax fully; usually with reference to gastrointestinal smooth muscles or to esophageal achalasia when not otherwise specified.
Study tip: Do not confuse this with diffuse esophageal spasm.
