Etymology:
Gr. amphóteros: “each of two” or Gr. ámphō: “both”
Definition:
A molecule or other compound that has both (each of two) opposing properties on a specific continuum, usually in reference to acids and bases (e.g. water, H2O, can act as an acid by donating a proton to become OH-, or can act as a base by accepting a proton to become H3O+).
