Ankylosing spondylitis
Etymology:
Gr. ankúlos: “bent, crooked” (referring to the crooked shape of highly arthritic joints) + Gr. -osis: “state, abnormal condition, or action” + L. spondylus: “vertebra” + Gr. -îtis: inflammation (*see 'itis entry for full etymology)
Definition:
A particular arthritis disease that affects usually the joints between vertebrae and the sacroiliac joint.
