Arachnoid mater
Etymology:
Gr. arakhnoeidḗs: “like a cobweb” + L. māter: “mother”
Definition:
The middle layer of the meninges; a membrane that protects the brain and spinal cord below the dura mater and above the subarachnoid space and the pia mater. As it is pulled away from the dura mater, the arachnoid mater looks like a cobweb.
