Atherosclerosis
Etymology:
Gr. athḗra: “gruel” (gruel is a thin, watery porridge, which resembles the fatty buildup seen in arteries) + Gr. sklēroûn: “to harden, indurate”
Definition:
The clogging or hardening of arteries or blood vessels caused by plaques (accumulations of fatty deposits, usually cholesterol, which resembles a type of porridge, oatmeal on gross inspection).
It is worth noting, atherosclerosis is easily confused with arteriosclerosis or hardening of arteries, for which atherosclerosis is one of the most common causes.
