Etymology:
Gr. baktēría: “staff, cane”, so named because the first observed bacteria were staff-shaped
Definition:
A single-celled organism (which can often be in the shape of a staff/rod, but can resemble other shapes as well) with cell walls but no nucleus or organelles.
