Bell's palsy
Etymology:
Named after Scottish surgeon Charles Bell (1774–1842), who first described the connection of the facial nerve to the condition.
Definition:
A type of facial paralysis affecting cranial nerve VII (facial nerve) that results in a temporary inability to control the facial muscles on the affected side of the face. The cause is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by a viral infection and consequent swelling.
