Etymology:
Definition:
Borrowed from French chancre: “cancer”, from L. cancer: “crab” (by metathesis from Gr. karkínos: “crab; ulcer; cancer”) + -oid, from Gr. eîdos: “form, likeness”
A sexually transmitted infection, caused by bacteria of species Haemophilus ducreyi, characterized by painful sores/ulcers on the genitalia (don't confuse this with a painless chancre).
