Cholera

Etymology:
Definition:

L. cholera: “bilious disease”, from Gr. Gr. kholéra: "cholera". There have been multiple proposed derivations of the Gr. kholéra, including Gr. kholḗ: “bile” + Gr. rhein: "to flow", which alludes to the idea that the acute vomiting and diarrhea seen in cholera reflects a profuse flowing/discharge of bodily fluids (or "humors" in ancient times), including bile. Another proposed derivation is from Gr. kólon: "large intestine" +  Gr. rhein: "to flow", which reflects the same idea of "flow" (via diarrhea and vomiting) out of the large intestine.

Any of several acute infectious diseases of humans and domestic animals, caused by certain strains of the Vibrio cholerae bacterium through ingestion of contaminated water or food, usually marked by severe gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration (due to fluid flowing out of the body).
