Cholesterol
Etymology:
Definition:
Gr. kholḗ: “gall, bile” + Gr. stereós: “firm, solid”, from originally being discovered by François Poulletier de la Salle in 1769, as a solid in gallstones. The suffix "-ol" was later added to indicate its chemical structure as an alcohol.
A sterol lipid synthesized by the liver (where the fatlike substance could solidify in combination with other compounds in bile, which is stored in the gallbladder nestled just underneath the liver) and transported in the bloodstream to the membranes of all animal cells; it plays a central role in many biochemical processes and, as contained within lipoproteins that coat the walls of blood vessels, is associated with cardiovascular disease.
