Cirrhosis

Etymology:
Definition:

Gr. kirrhós: “tawny” (meaning orange-brown or yellowish-brown in color) + Gr. -osis: “state, abnormal condition, or action”

A chronic disease of the liver caused by damage from toxins (including alcohol), metabolic problems, hepatitis or nutritional deprivation, characterised by an increase in fibrous tissue and the destruction of liver cells. Cirrhotic livers have an abnormal tawny, orange-brown color to them on gross inspection.
