Definition:
Gr. klōstḗr: “spindle” (so named for its resemblence under a microscope) + -idium (taxonomic suffix) + L. botulus: “sausage”
Clostridium botulinum is an spindle/rod-shaped, anaerobic bacterium that grows in improperly prepared food (so named because sausage was the first identified source of the bacterium).
