Emphysema
Etymology:
L. emphysema: “inflation, swelling” and Gr. emphusân: “puff up”, from en: “in” + phûsa: “wind”
Definition:
An abnormal accumulation of air or other gas in tissues, most commonly the lungs (where the alveoli are abnormally inflated, meaning they have increased air space due to the loss of their elastic recoil). Pulmonary emphysema, specifically, is a chronic lung disease, which is one type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
