Endocrine system
Etymology:
E. endo: "within" + Gr. krinein: "sift, sieve, secrete"
Definition:
The endocrine system is comprised of a variety of glands that secrete hormones involved with regulating a variety of body functions via feedback loops. Endocrine glands, which secrete hormones directly inside the body via the bloodstream, are contrasted to exocrine glands, which secrete substances through a ductal system onto some epithelial body surface often on the outside of the body.
