Etymology:
Gr. epí: “on top of” + blastós: “germ, sprout”
Definition:
The outer layer (i.e., the layer "on top") of a blastula that drives the embryo proper through its differentiation into the three primary germ layers, ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm, during gastrulation.
