Foramen lacerum

Etymology:

L. forāmen: “aperture or opening produced by boring” + L. lakeros: "to tear, rend"

Definition:

An aperture (i.e. "hole') in the base of the skull between the sphenoid, temporal and occipital bones through which structures including the artery and the nerve of the pterygoid canal course or "tear through."
