Foramen spinosum

Etymology:

L. forāmen: “aperture or opening produced by boring” + L. spīnōsus: "thorny, prickly"

Definition:

An aperture (i.e. "hole") in the greater wing of the sphenoid bone that gives passage to the middle meningeal artery. The foramen spinosum was first described by the Danish anatomist Jakob Benignus Winslow in the 18th century. It is so-named because of its relationship to the spinous process of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone.
