Gluteus medius
Etymology:
Gr. gloutós: "rump, buttock" + L. medius: “middle”
The name "gluteus medius" refers to its position as the middle of the three gluteal muscles.
Definition:
The gluteus medius refers to a large fan-shaped muscle located in the posterior hip and in between (i.e. the middle) the gluteus minimus and gluteus maximus (the other buttock muscles). It extends from the gluteal surface of the ilium, between the anterior and posterior gluteal lines, to the lateral aspect of the greater trochanter of the femur. The gluteus medius acts on the hip joint to produce two main movements: its anterior part is responsible for internally rotating the thigh, while the entire muscle is involved in abducting the thigh. Additionally, the gluteus medius muscle plays a crucial role in stabilizing the pelvis while standing or walking.
