Gluteus minimus
Etymology:
Gr. gloutós: "rump, buttock" + L. minimus: "a being of the smallest size"
The name "gluteus minimus" refers to its position as the smallest of the three gluteal muscles.
Definition:
The gluteus minimus refers to a small triangular muscle located deep in the posterior region of the hip. It is one of the three gluteal ("buttock") muscles, along with the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius. The muscle arises from the gluteal surface of the ilium, between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines, and inserts onto the anterior aspect of the greater trochanter of the femur. The gluteus minimus acts in synergy with the gluteus medius to produce movements at the hip joint, specifically internal rotation and abduction of the thigh. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in stabilizing the pelvis during the gait cycle.
