- itis

Etymology:

Gr. -îtis: denoting diseases characterized by inflammation

Definition:

Referring to any process of inflammation; however, its literal meaning is “pertaining to”. This (-îtis) is the feminine form of adjectival suffix (-ítēs). The English suffix derives from the feminine form due to its use with the feminine noun νόσος (nósos: “disease”), particularly with ἀρθρῖτις (νόσος) (arthrîtis (nósos), “disease of the joints”) (one of the earliest English borrowings from which the suffix was extracted to many other inflammatory processes).

Note: Any pathologies on Medymology containing "-itis" will be equated to inflammation; however, the full etymology will be referenced back to this entry
