Karyotype

Etymology:

Gr: káruon: “nut, kernel”

Definition:

The observed characteristics (number, type, shape, etc.) of the chromosomes of an individual or species. The chromosomes, which hold genetic material, are located in the cell nucleus. As a prefix, karyo- confers anything relating to the nucleus of cells. The nucleus could definitely be seen as the "kernel" of the cell.
