Etymology:
L. medulla: “pith (the soft, spongy substance in the center of the stems of many plants and trees), marrow”, perhaps from L. medius: “middle”
Definition:
1) The center or middle of a, typically, soft-tissue structure (e.g., adrenal medulla)
2) The inner substance of various organs and structures, especially the marrow of bones.
