Opisthotonos

Etymology:

Gr. opistho: "back" + Gr. tónos: “stretching, tension”

Definition:

A state of severe hyperextension and spasticity (i.e., tension) in which an individual's head, neck and spinal column (i.e., back) enter into a complete "bridging" or "arching" position. This sustained spasm can be produced by various diseases such as infection with the bacteria Clostridium tetani.
