Pernicious anemia

Etymology:

L. perniciōsus: “destructive” + Gr. an: “not” + Gr. haîma: “blood”

Definition:

A severe form of anemia (i.e., not a sufficient level of red blood cells) caused by vitamin B12 insufficiency, which is often due to autoimmune destruction of parietal cells within the stomach; parietal cells produce intrinsic factor, which is needed for vitamin B12 absorption.
