Polio
Etymology:
Gr. poliós: “gray”, so named because the gray matter in the spinal cord is inflamed, which causes muscle weakness and paralysis
Definition:
Acute infection by the poliovirus, especially of the motor neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem (namely the neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, and axon terminals that constitute the gray matter of the brain, as opposed to the myelin sheaths wrapping around the axons themselves, which make up the white matter of the brain) leading to muscle weakness, paralysis and sometimes deformity.
