Retinitis pigmentosa

Etymology:

L. rētīna: “relating to a net” + Gr. -îtis*: inflammation (*see 'itis entry for full etymology) + L . pigmentum: “pigment, paint”

Definition:

An inherited degenerative eye disease that causes severe vision impairment and often blindness due to progressive loss of rod photoreceptor cells that line the retina of the eyeball. Diagnosis is through eye examination of the retina finding dark pigment deposits caused by the rupture of the underlying retinal pigmented epithelial cells, given that these cells contain melanin.
