Talus

Etymology:

L. tālus: "the ankle or anklebone (of animals); knucklebone", originally from L. taxillus: "a small cube or die", so named because Roman soldiers would make dice from the anklebone or heel of a horse. Taxillus then became shortened to talus.

Definition:

The bone of the ankle positioned between the tibia (superior) and the calcaneus (inferior).
