Tonsil
Etymology:
Ultimately from Proto-Italic *tonslis, from Proto-Indo-European *ten-: “to stretch, to extend”
Definition:
1) The tonsils are a set of lymphoid organs facing into the aerodigestive tract, which is known as Waldeyer's tonsillar ring and consists of the adenoid tonsil, two tubal tonsils, two palatine tonsils, and the lingual tonsils. These organs play an important role in the immune system.
2) Could refer to cerebellar tonsils: a rounded lobule on the undersurface of each cerebellar hemisphere, continuous medially with the uvula of the cerebellar vermis and superiorly by the flocculonodular lobe
