L. vincō: "to overcome, to fight" + Gr. mycin: "fungus", so called because the antibiotic is produced by Streptomyces bacteria, which have fungus-like properties

A glycopeptide antibiotic produced by the actinomycete Amycolaptosis orientalis, often used against Gram-positive bacteria, especially staphylococci
